Drawing Chairs

6/13/18

Today I’m learning how to draw chairs.
Confession: I’ve drawn chairs before. However, I have never learned how to draw chairs, or even practised drawing chairs. They were always just a seat for what I wanted to draw, or a hastily scribbled representation of where a chair would be in my dream house. So I think it still counts. :) Plus I’ve never drawn a good chair, so that’s new… well, I guess you can be the judge of that…
We have a variety of chairs, so I started out with one that we’ve had for most of my life. I thought it would be pretty simple until I discovered that what I’d thought were nice, easy, straight lines were actually curves that changed thickness. Also, the seat wasn’t rectangular, it was a trapezoid. I also made the mistake of starting out at the top and meticulously making my way down, instead of sketching the basic shape first which would have saved me a lot of time that I spent erasing and trying to get the perfect angle. I think it would have improved the overall realism of the chair.

My second chair was a simpler chair and I sketched it out before filling in the details, but it still doesn’t look as good as I want it to.

My third chair (again, starting with the outline) was a prettier chair as well as being a better drawing. Here’s a timelapse of me drawing it.

The last chair I drew was a big brown armchair in my living room. I decided it would be more interesting if I shaded it in, so I did…

Other new things I did today:
  • Help ESL kids at Kenwood with their homework
  • Take a timelapse of myself drawing (I tested it out by drawing a cat)
